Ryatt Jean Sadler's story is one of unimaginable tragedy, extraordinary resilience, and unconditional love. Although his life began with devastating trauma, it became a testament to courage, hope, and the profound impact one child can have on countless lives.

Ryatt's story is the heart behind Ryatt's Wings. It is the reason we advocate, the reason we serve, and the reason we believe every child deserves to be safe, loved, and protected.
April 17, 2024
On April 17, 2024, five-month-old Ryatt suffered catastrophic, life-threatening injuries while in the care of his biological family in Angelina County, Texas.
​
Ryatt was found unresponsive and was no longer breathing. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded immediately and transported him to a local hospital, where medical staff worked urgently to stabilize him.
​
Due to the severity of his condition, Ryatt was first life-flighted to Texas Children's Hospital – The Woodlands. As physicians evaluated the extent of his injuries, it became clear that he required the highest level of specialized pediatric trauma and neurological care. He was then life-flighted a second time to Texas Children's Hospital Main Campus in Houston, Texas, where an extraordinary team of physicians, nurses, and specialists immediately began fighting to save his life.

After extensive testing and evaluations, doctors determined that Ryatt had suffered severe non-accidental head trauma, also known as abusive head trauma. His injuries included:

Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Bilateral subdural hematomas

Extensive retinal hemorrhages

Skull fracture

Spinal fracture

Severed neck tendons

The extent of Ryatt's injuries led his medical team to determine that they were the result of non-accidental abusive head trauma. While the criminal investigation remains unresolved and those responsible have not yet been held accountable, it is known that Ryatt was in the care of his biological family at the time these life-altering injuries occurred.
​
The outlook was devastating.
​
To help control the swelling in his brain and give his body the best possible chance to heal, Ryatt was placed into a medically induced coma for more than two weeks. Throughout that time, his medical team worked tirelessly to stabilize him while closely monitoring his condition around the clock.
​
Doctors prepared everyone who loved Ryatt for the possibility that he would not survive.
​
For more than three weeks, Ryatt remained on life support as physicians, nurses, and specialists fought relentlessly to save his life. Every day was uncertain. Every hour was precious.
​
Against overwhelming odds, Ryatt survived.
​
Although his injuries permanently changed the course of his life, they would never define the incredible little boy he would become.
A New Beginning
After weeks in intensive care and months of hospitalization, Ryatt entered foster care.
Not long afterward, he came into our home.
​
Before Ryatt could be discharged, we completed extensive medical training to prepare for the complex care he would require every day. We learned how to manage his medical equipment, administer medications, respond to medical emergencies, and provide the specialized care he would depend on around the clock.
​
Because of the severity of his injuries and his extensive medical needs, Ryatt qualified for 24-hour skilled private duty nursing care. Our home quickly became more than a home—it became a place where expert medical care and unconditional love existed side by side. Nurses, therapists, physicians, specialists, and caregivers became part of our extended family as we worked together to provide Ryatt with the highest quality of life possible.
​
Ryatt required a gastrostomy tube (G-tube) for all of his nutrition and hydration, supplemental oxygen, BiPAP respiratory support, multiple daily medications, and ongoing care from a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals.
​
As he grew, the lifelong effects of his injuries became increasingly evident. He was diagnosed with trauma-induced cerebral palsy, trauma-induced epilepsy, cortical blindness, dystonia, dysphagia, developmental delays, bilateral hip dysplasia, airway clearance impairment, Lennox-Gastout Syndrome, and numerous other complications resulting from his traumatic brain injury. Managing his complex medical needs required constant monitoring, countless specialist appointments, intensive therapies, adaptive equipment, and multiple medications every single day.
​
Despite the unimaginable challenges his body endured, Ryatt's spirit remained incredibly bright.
He loved hearing familiar voices, listening to music, feeling the warmth of the sunshine on his face, and, most of all, being cuddled by the people who loved him. His smile had a way of filling every room, and his laugh reminded everyone around him that joy can exist even in the midst of life's greatest hardships.

While his injuries changed every aspect of his physical life, they never diminished the love he gave or the joy he brought to those around him. Ryatt became an inspiration to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him, teaching us lessons in resilience, unconditional love, courage, and hope.
Fighting Every Day
Life with Ryatt was measured differently.
​
Victories weren't always measured by major milestones.
​
Sometimes a victory was a peaceful night's sleep.
​
Sometimes it was a successful therapy appointment.
​
Sometimes it was a day with fewer seizures.
​
Sometimes it was hearing him laugh.
​
Sometimes it was simply seeing him comfortable and free from pain.
​
Every accomplishment mattered.
​
Every smile was celebrated.
​
Every day together was a gift.
​
Our lives revolved around medications, therapies, doctor's appointments, hospital stays, adaptive equipment, and advocating for Ryatt's needs. Every decision we made centered around giving him the fullest and happiest life possible.
​
To us, Ryatt was never defined by a diagnosis.
​
He was our son.
​
He was our brother.
​
He was deeply loved by his siblings, grandparents, extended family, nurses, physicians, therapists, caregivers, and everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Forever Our Son
As time passed, Ryatt's biological parents' rights were legally terminated.
​
The little boy who had endured so much officially became part of our forever family.
​
Becoming Ryatt's parents was never about paperwork.
​
We loved him long before a judge made it official.
​
Every birthday, every holiday, every therapy milestone, every smile, and every cuddle became a reminder that family is built through love, commitment, and showing up every single day.
​
Ryatt forever changed our lives.
His Final Journey
As Ryatt grew, the lasting effects of his traumatic brain injury continued to impact every system of his body.
​
Despite the incredible dedication of his physicians, specialists, nurses, and therapists, his body slowly began to decline.
​
His seizures became more difficult to control.
​
His pain became more frequent.
​
His body continued to bear the weight of the injuries he suffered as an infant.
​
Eventually, the focus shifted from extending life to ensuring comfort.
​
Ryatt entered hospice care, where every decision centered on keeping him comfortable and surrounding him with love.
​
Our days became slower.
​
Every cuddle lasted longer.
​
Every smile became even more precious.
​
Every "I love you" carried even greater meaning.
​
We treasured every single moment we had together.
The Day We Became a Family Forever
Ryatt's adoption was originally scheduled for the following week—a day we had eagerly anticipated and prayed over for months.
​
However, as his condition rapidly declined, hospice gently prepared us for the heartbreaking possibility that Ryatt might not survive the night.
​
In that moment, nothing mattered more than making sure he knew, both in our hearts and in the eyes of the law, that he was our son.
​
I immediately called our adoption attorney and explained the urgency of the situation. Without hesitation, our attorney worked tirelessly to contact the judge and everyone necessary to make an emergency adoption hearing possible.
​
Through the incredible compassion and swift action of our attorney, the court, and everyone involved, an emergency hearing was granted.
​
That day, Ryatt officially became our son.
​
The paperwork that had once been scheduled for another day became a sacred moment we will cherish forever. Before Ryatt entered Heaven, he entered our family—legally, permanently, and forever.
​
Surrounded by the family who loved him beyond measure, Ryatt peacefully entered the arms of Jesus later that same day.
​
The day that was meant to be one of the happiest days of our lives became one of the most heartbreaking.
​
While our hearts were shattered, we found peace in knowing that Ryatt left this world exactly as he deserved—safe, deeply loved, and forever part of our family.
​
He was no longer hurting.
​
He was no longer fighting.
​
He was finally at peace.
​
He was finally home.
Legacy and Impact
Ryatt's story did not end the day he entered Heaven.
​
His legacy lives on through every child we serve, every family we support, and every life touched by Ryatt's Wings.
​
After experiencing firsthand the realities of child abuse, prolonged hospitalizations, medical complexity, foster care, adoption, and the overwhelming challenges families face during times of crisis, we knew we wanted to honor Ryatt by helping others walk similar journeys.
​
Ryatt's Wings exists to protect, support, and advocate for abused and medically fragile children by providing practical assistance to families during their greatest times of need. Through child abuse awareness, hospital support, financial assistance, and resources for foster, kinship, adoptive, and biological families caring for vulnerable children, we strive to ensure that every child is safe, every family is supported, and every voice is heard.

Today, we continue to pray for justice for Ryatt and for every child who has suffered abuse. We remain committed to raising awareness, supporting families in crisis, and being a voice for children who cannot speak for themselves.
Ryatt's voice may have been small, but his legacy is immeasurable.
